Kick Off the New Year Outdoors with Maryland State Parks

First Day Hikes include First Weekend Outdoor Opportunities, with Ranger-led Hikes and Self-Guided Hike Options for the Whole Family!


Maryland State Parks will be offering First Weekend hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2022 - January 2, 2023. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the new year! Join us in Maryland on January 1st or throughout the first weekend of the new year for a hike at a state park near you.

For 2023, there are two types of hikes available:

  • Ranger-led hikes: These hikes will be led by a Park Ranger, have specific start times and many require pre-registration. Please read the details provided below carefully.
  • Self-guided hikes: These hikes will be available throughout the weekend, on well marked trails. Park staff and volunteers may be available to get you started but will not be joining you on the hike itself. Please read the details provided below carefully.

Please note you are welcome to take a First Day Hike on any trail or at any State Park during this weekend event, if you would prefer!

A New Trail for the New Year! - Ranger-led Hike

Description:
Dans Mountain State Park is proud to offer a First Day Hike on a brand new constructed trail! Participants will meet at the Hill Run Group Campsite Pavilion and be shuttled to the trail head to avoid a steep return walk along the road. The hike will be three miles, traversing natural surfaces as you descend over 600 feet through forested, rocky terrain. Complimentary coffee and hot chocolate will be provided for participants.

Additional Details:
Leashed pets are welcome. This trail is not stroller or wheelchair accessible. Portable restrooms are located at the nearby Water Station Run fishing pond or the Mountain Top Pavilion off of Recreation Area Rd. This trail traverses several rocky areas that may be challenging with ice or snow present. Hiking poles are recommended.

Rocky Gap State Park


Lakeside Loop Trail - Self-Guided Hike

Description:
Want to enjoy the trail at your own pace? Visit Rocky Gap State Park's most popular trail, the Lakeside Loop, and enjoy the scenery of the lake in the winter time. This trail is a loop, and visitors can turn around at any time, making it easy to pick whatever length you'd like to hike! Stop by the Nature Center area for warm beverages, s'mores, and this year's First Year Hike sticker!

Leashed pets are welcome. Surfaces are unpaved, natural surface trails, and can be often uneven, and quite rocky with lots of uphil and downhill traversing. Bathrooms are available at the Nature Center, as well as in the Day Use area of the park.

This hike will take place on paved surfaces throughout the campground. While surfaces will be paved, please be aware we often encounter snowy or icy conditions in January. Leashed pets that are comfortable around large groups of people and other pets are welcome. Restrooms are available at the Nature Center.

Description:
Hike up the trail for a wonderful view of the Potomac River valley from the Potomac River Overlook. The overlook is not handicapped-accessible. Bring a snack and something to drink since there is no potable water available.

Cunningham Falls State Park


Catoctin Furnace & African American Cemetery - Self-Guided Hike

Description:
Start the new year with a little hiking and a lot of knowledge. Start at the lower parking area in the Manor Area of Cunningham Falls State Park, this trail (approximately 2.2 miles round trip) takes you along Little Hunting Creek and over US 15 via a steep footbridge to the historic Catoctin Furnace Historic Site. There you will find the ruins of the Iron Master’s House and the furnace “Isabella.” Continue beyond the furnace site to an African American Cemetery that was the final resting place of some of the furnace workers. Interpretive panels along the trail tell you the story of the land and of the workers who lived and worked at the furnace over its history.

Additional Details:
Parking is available at the Furnace site along Route 806 for those who cannot hike over the footbridge (this section is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Portable toilets are available in the Manor Area only. Leashed pets are welcome.

Lower Falls Trail & Cliff Trail Loop - Ranger-led Hike

Description:
Start the new year with a ranger to hike to Cunningham Falls on the Lower trail. Continue with the ranger back to the parking area via the Cliff trail which involves some climbing over rocks, or self guide yourself back on the Lower Falls trail. Cliff trail involves some light rock climbing, not suitable for strollers.

Lower Falls is stroller accessible. Port a pot only on site at the parking lot areas. Leashed pets are welcome. Parking will be in the South Beach Lot.

Gathland State Park

Description:
Join us for a guided First Day hike through history! We'll begin at Crampton's Gap and hike on the Appalachian Trail to Brownsville Pass, one of the lesser-known locations that played a major role in the 1862 Maryland Campaign and the Battle of South Mountain. Once we reach Brownsville Pass, you will have the option to hike back or continue towards Weverton Cliff Overlook.

Hike two is an easier walk on the discovery trail, following the lake to the boat launch and back. Both hikes will leave from the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center at noon.

Bluebird Trail - Self-Guided Hike

Description:
Come to Sang Run State Park for a self-guided hike through the historic agricultural fields. This stroll is excellent for birdwatching and beautiful views of the Youghiogheny River Valley. The Bluebird trail is marked by blue circles, and starts just up the hill by the garden behind the Friends Store. Prepare for possible snow covered trails with proper hiking shoes and warm clothing and binoculars. Bring something to drink since there is no potable water on-site.

Description:
The land that is now Fort Frederick State Park was purchased by Maryland in December of 1922. Although it would take another 15 years to develop it into a full-fledged park, we are starting the 100th Anniversary Celebration with self-guided hikes along the Beaver Pond Trail (1 mile), the Plantation Trail (1 mile) and the Green Trail (2 Miles) as well as walking tours featuring the history of the 1756 Fort, The Williams Family and The Civilian Conservation Corps. Start your visit at the park Visitor Center where you can enjoy the newly renovated museum exhibit highlighting stories of the fort and park. Park map and walking tours will be available at the Visitor Center and can also be printed at home from the park’s website. 11 am to 4 pm.

This beginner friendly hike is rated "easy" as you stroll through the beautiful (and flat!) Black Marsh loop trail. The guided version of this hike will be hosted at 8:00 am and 11:00 am. Hikers will meet in the parking lot by the Black Marsh trailhead.

This is our "difficult" rated first day hike based on length, terrain, and elevation. Hikers will meet at the Bunker Hill parking lot by the blue trailhead. The start time for this hike is 11:00am, and due to the length there will only be one park-guided hike, but we will leave maps at the trailhead for those who come earlier/later to do the self-guided version.

Start the new year with a little mammal mania-- Park outside the white gates and follow the driveway to the Mt Aventine Mansion. On the back porch of the mansion you will find a sign in sheet and a little scavenger hunt (as well as your first day hike sticker). You will then continue to the Marsh Trail where you will be able to travel through a variety of habitats, looking for signs of wildlife along the way. This trail is not a loop, so when you reach the end, turn around and come back!

The trailhead for White-Tail Trail is located directly across from the Camper Check-In Parking Lot. You can pick up your First Day Hike sticker at the trailhead.

Start 2023 off by trying out a new hobby: Birding. Join Janes Island State Park Rangers and volunteers for an easy, two mile hike that will give teach you the basics of birding. This hike will take place Irish Grove, an approximately 2,300 acre nature preserve on the Pocomoke Sound that is owned by the Maryland Ornithological Society. We will meet in the Camper Check-In Parking Lot at Janes Island and then caravan to Irish Grove. (Approximately a 10-minute drive away.)

Parking at Janes Island and Irish Grove is free. We will meet in the Camper Check-In Parking Lot at Janes Island and then caravan to Irish Grove. Leashed pets are welcome. Restrooms are available at Janes Island and outhouses are available at Irish Grove. Irish Grove is stroller friendly. Make sure to bring plenty of water and to wear shoes/clothing appropriate for the weather (rain, snow or shine). Bringing binoculars is recommended, but a limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Description:
Start 2023 off on the right pedal and join Janes Island State Park Rangers and Volunteers for a guided bike ride through Crisfield. This approximately 5-mile bike ride will start at Janes Island State Park, go through park, out on Canal Drive and Jackonsville Rd. to the Terrapin Run Recreational Trail along 413, to Crisfield and then loop back to Janes Island State Park.

Additional Details:
Parking at Janes Island is free. Restrooms are available on site. Make sure to bring plenty of water and to wear shoes/clothing appropriate for the weather (rain, snow or shine). Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes, helmets, and reflective clothing. A limited number of bikes will be available for rent for $5 per bike.

Description:
Join Assateague Coastkeeper and Assateague Coastal Trust staff for a guided beach walk and clean up at the Assateague State Park Day use lot. The beach may not be the first destination on your list in January but the island has many treasures to share. As you explore look for winter waterfowl, raptors, sika deer, and of course the wild horses. Dress for the weather and bring work gloves! Stop by the Day-Use boardwalk for a a fireside chat with park staff, share stories, ask questions and make a connection. Hot chocolate will be provided by ACT.

Hike will start at 10:00am. State Park Staff will be available 10am-12pm at the Day-Use Boardwalk.
