Welcome to Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park! When building this state of the art facility, we were lucky enough to use a portion of land in the heart of “Tubman Country”. The park is less than 10 miles from Harriet Tubman’s place of birth, and where she spent her youth enslaved. The surrounding land is part of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has kept a large portion of Tubman Country pristine since 1933. To help maintain the landscape that Harriet Tubman traversed, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park has made it our duty to be as kind to our land as possible. We have done this by including many green features in our Visitor Center, administrative building, and surrounding landscape, to meet LEED Silver certification standards.
Not only are we able to interpret history, we also help the surrounding ecosystems that provide many benefits to native pollinators! In our Park Quest activity book, you will explore our green features and learn how we help protect pollinators.
Park Quest is available Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning May 1, 2022 through October 30, 2022.
The quest begins in front of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center and may take participants about 1 hour to complete.
You can work individually or as a team.
Pencils and colored pencils will be available.
Expect to walk at least ½ mile through our Legacy Garden.
Take a picture of your completed vegetative roof design to show that you participated in the quest.
The quest is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Pets are permitted on the park's property and Legacy Garden but are NOT permitted inside the Visitor Center.
Park Information
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park is located in the heart of Dorchester County Maryland. The 17-acre park is home to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center, administrative offices, a recreational pavilion and a Legacy Garden. This location was chosen because the view is preserved by the surrounding Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Very few structures remain from Harriet Tubman's time in the Choptank River region, so the landscape is a large part of the experience. Tubman may have traveled through the area going between Madison and Bucktown.
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park has only been open for 5 years and has a very successful visitation rate with thousands of visitors each year, from all 50 states and over 60 countries. Please respect the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman when visiting this park by following park rules and regulations and following the LEAVE NO TRACE ethic.

Hours of operation: The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no entry fee. Arrival before 3 p.m. is recommended.
Driving Directions:
From Annapolis and points north: Take US-301 North/US-50 East towards Cambridge. Turn right on Woods Road. Turn right on Route 16 (Church Creek Road). Turn left onto Route 335 (Golden Hill Road.) Drive approximately 4.5 miles and the Visitor Center will be on your right.
From Ocean City and points south: Take US-50 West towards Cambridge. Turn left on Route 16 (Church Creek Road). Turn left onto Route 335 (Golden Hill Road.) Drive approximately 4.5 miles and the Visitor Center will be on your right.
