Park Quest: Fair Hill NRMA

Fair Hill/Bohemia River Park Quest 2022

Quest Materials

FORESTS: The Foundation for Pollination!

Pollination is the driving force behind plant reproduction and is essential to life on earth. It is the foundation of food webs. In fact, 80% of all crop plants worldwide require pollination. Pollination is deeply rooted in forests, specifically in TREES! Native trees support the life cycles of many pollinators, providing adults and caterpillars with food, and eggs and pupae with habitat and protection. A healthy forest is composed of a diversity of tree species, which, in turn, support a wide variety of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, moths, birds, bats, beetles and other insects. For example, those colorful tiger swallowtail butterflies in your summer garden spend their early days as caterpillars chewing on the leaves of tulip poplar trees.

On your Quest here at Fair Hill you will have the opportunity to explore an old forest which has remained undisturbed by human activity since colonial times. Walk beneath towering tulip poplars, oaks, and beeches, balance your way across rocky streams and immerse yourself in the serene beauty and fragrance of a healthy ecosystem. Learn about the connections between trees and pollinators along the way and solve clues to open the lock box to retrieve your stamp. Inside the lock box you will find directions to our sister property, Bohemia River State Park, where you can experience pollinator habitat in the form of a native meadow. Happy Hiking!
