"Choose Your Own" Event Quest

Park Quest 2022:

Take Action with Chesapeake Natives

Quest Materials

What is Chesapeake Natives?

Chesapeake Natives is a local non-profit, primarily run by volunteers at Rosaryville State Park! They’re enthusiastic promoters of local ecotype plants native to the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which also support our local pollinators! Sign up here to join their mailing list.

Two of Chesapeake Native’s goals are to:

  • to expand the nursery operation at Eleanor Medill “Cissy” Patterson’s historic greenhouse at Mt. Airy Mansion in Rosaryville State Park, Upper Marlboro. This 80-year greenhouse is being brought back to life with the education and training of local volunteers in plant production from local ecotypes, forest restoration, and community outreach, using native plants and the local environment of southern Prince George’s County, in southern Maryland.
  • to build up an army of people that know how to work with native species! Both small and large scale forest and meadow restorations, and their buffers, require planting with local ecotypes. A wide range of these plants are almost invariably unavailable for restoration projects. Working with native plants can lead people into jobs that work to preserve the natural environment.

You can help!

This Park Quest activity is similar to a “choose your own adventure” story…you decide how and when to get involved! Select one of the following 3 ways to volunteer with Chesapeake Natives.

  1. Re-potting efforts- If you’re interested in learning about nursery plant production and invasive Jumping worms…this might be the choice for you!
  2. Demonstration garden- If you’re interested in learning about plant care and weed management…this might be the choice for you!
  3. Purchasing native plants- If you’re interested in attracting wildlife to your own home and yard by providing appropriate food and shelter…this might be the choice for you!
