Park Quest: Assateague State Park

Quest Materials

Quest Information:

Thank you for your interest in Assateague’s 2022 Park Quest - Pollination Station! The park quest begins at the Assateague State Park marina, located at 7100 Stephen Decatur Highway in Berlin, MD just before the bridge to get onto Assateague Island. Look for the park quest sign at the parking lot bulletin board; this is where you will begin your quest to learn all about Maryland’s native pollinator species. This quest is self-guided and limited worksheets and crayons will be provided. You may print your own worksheet ahead of time.

Take a short 1 mile walk around Assateague’s marina! You will follow scavenger hunt clues which will journey you around the living shoreline and into the pollinator garden. Finish off your nice walk with a lovely pollinator photo opportunity! Bring along with you the Park Quest worksheets as well as a writing utensil (colorful crayons or pencils would be perfect). This walk will take you 30-45 minutes to complete, depending on your walking pace. The walk takes you through sand and grass; for this reason, it is not wheelchair accessible and only partially stroller accessible. Leashed pets are welcome.

Park Information:

Assateague State Park is Maryland’s only oceanfront park. While the beach and the wild horses are the typical draw for visitors, the park also has a marina located on the Sinepuxent Bay. The bayside offers visitors the chance to explore secluded coves by canoe or kayak. The marsh areas have a variety of wildlife, including deer, waterfowl and pollinator species. The marina has a boat launch, a dock for fishing and crabbing, a bathroom facility, and water fountains. A few picnic tables are scattered around the marina area for visitor use. A highlight of the Assateague State Park marina is the living shoreline, an erosion mitigation project which has restored pollinator and terrapin habitat as well as created nice beach areas for visitors. Leashed pets are allowed at the marina. The marina is open dawn to dusk.
Standard parking charges apply – $5.00 per vehicle
